THE 1987 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Sydney BRENNER (Cambridge, UK), Walter J. GEHRING (Basel) and Dominique STEHELIN (Lille).
The 1987 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine is attributed to three scientists who have made outstanding contributions to our understanding of gene function.
Sidney BRENNERis a pioneer in genetic engineering. He has launched a global search on the genes, body plan and developmental program of a simple multicellular organism: the worm Caenorhabditis elegans. He also plans to establish a complete map of the human genome.
Walter J. GEHRING has discovered homeotic genes which control the developmental pathways that determine the body plan of the fruitfly Drosophila.
Dominique STEHELIN has identified, in collaboration with J.M. Bishop, the first oncogene of viral origin, the gene SRC, which transforms normal cells to cancerous cells. His present work is devoted to cellular genes which induce cancer (oncogenes).
THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 10, 1987, in Geneva (Switzerland).
