THE 1990 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Nicole LE DOUARIN (Nogent-sur-Marne), Gottfried SCHATZ (Basel) and Harald VON BOEHMER (Basel).
The 1990 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine is attributed to three eminent scientists who work on fundamental aspects of medicine in developmental biology, immunology and cell biology.
By grafting tissue in embryos of quail and chicken, Nicole LE DOUARIN studies the migration of cells during development as well as factors which determine this migration.
By elucidating the sorting and import of proteins from the cytoplasm into mitochondria, Gottfried SCHATZ has decisively contributed to our understanding of the biogenesis of these organelles. The mitochondria are required for cellular energy production.
Harald VON BOEHMER is interested in the immune competence acquired by T lymphocytes during their maturation in the thymus, and which permits to distinguish between "self" and “non-self" in the immune response.
THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 6, 1990, in Geneva (Switzerland).
