THE 1992 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Paul NURSE (London), Christiane NÜSSLEIN-VOLHARD (Tübingen) and Alain R.M. TOWNSEND (Oxford).
The 1992 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine is attributed to three researchers who made significant contributions to our knowledge of cell proliferation, of embryonal development and of the immune system.
By taking advantage of yeast genetics, Paul NURSE has demonstrated the essential role of kinases (enzymes) in the control of the cell cycle, mechanisms that are conserved in all species.
Christiane NÜSSLEIN-VOLHARD has discovered the genes which define the axes and primordial structures of embryos.
Alain R.M. TOWNSEND has elucidated how viral antigens are fragmented into peptides and presented on the surface of cells to the T lymphocytes of the immune system.
THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 24, 1992, in Geneva (Switzerland).
