THE 1993 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Jean-Pierre CHANGEUX (Paris), Richard HENDERSON (Cambridge, UK) and Kurt WÜTHRICH (Zurich).

The 1993 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine honours three scientists who work in structural biology, a domain of research that is presently very active.

Jean-Pierre CHANGEUX studies the structure and function of receptors and ion channels that form the basis of the neuromuscular transmission.

Richard HENDERSON develops techniques of electron microscopy for high-resolution structural analysis of proteins.

Kurt WÜTHRICH is a pioneer in the study of protein structure in solution by nuclear magnetic resonance. In particular, he identified the structure of the prion, which is vital for understanding the functioning of this particle and hence for combating neurodegenerative diseases such as “mad cow” or Creutzfeld-Jacob disease.

THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 23, 1993, in Geneva (Switzerland).
