THE 1997 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Philip COHEN (Dundee), Kim A. NASMYTH (Vienna) and Richard PETO (Oxford).

The 1997 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine honours research work on biochemistry of cell regulations, on molecular biology of the cell cycle and, for the first time, in clinical epidemiology.

Philippe COHEN studies the signals transmitted by phosphorylation of certain proteins as well as the enzymes (kinases and phosphatases) involved, in particular in cells which could be the target of new drugs.

With the tool of yeast genetics, Kim NASMYTH contributes decisively to our knowledge of the cell cycle and chromosome separation during cell division.

By developing the methodology of statistics of large-scale clinical assays, Richard PETO has decisively contributed to the understanding of risk factors involved in smoking and certain habits of food consumption.

THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 18, 1997, in Geneva (Switzerland),.
