THE 1996 LOUIS-JEANTET PRIZE-WINNERS are Björn DAHLBÄCK (Malmö), Ulrich K. LAEMMLI (Geneva) and Nigel UNWIN (Cambridge, UK).

The 1996 Louis-Jeantet Prize for Medicine encourages both clinical research and more fundamental projects.

Björn DAHLBÄCK studies blood coagulation and has established new facts for the prevention of renal thromboses and pulmonary embolism.

Ulrich K. LAEMMLI is a pioneer in the analysis of chromosome structure where he discovered that DNA is attached to a skeleton of proteins. His work on chromosome structure could have important effects on cancer chemotherapy.

Nigel UNWIN has developed new methods of electron microscopy that allow him to study the structure of ion channels, in particular the structure of the acetylcholine receptor, which plays an essential role in signal transmission between nervous cells, as well as between neurons and muscular fibres.

THE AWARD CEREMONY was held on Friday April 19, 1996, in Geneva (Switzerland).
